Obituary for Robert and Nancy Johnson

Robert (“Bob”) Edward Johnson, age 88, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Sunday, February 18, 2018.

Born May 15, 1929, the son of the late J. Hubert Johnson and Thelma H. Johnson of Abingdon, VA, and the youngest of three siblings.

As son, husband, father, friend and professional, Bob faithfully served his church, family, civic and business commitments. During his teenage years, Bob worked in his parents’ family businesses, Johnson's Grocery, Johnson's Hams and Johnson's Florist. After graduating from William King High School (1946) and Hampden Sydney college (1950) where he was a member of Sigma Chi Fraternity (1946), Bob studied in the graduate program at Ohio State University. While serving in U.S. Navy, stationed in Baltimore, MD, he met his future wife, Nancy. They were engaged on Valentine’s Day, 1953, and married on March 14, 1953, in Nancy’s hometown, Charleroi, PA. After his term of duty was completed Bob and Nancy made their home in Abingdon, VA. While they raised their five children, Bob worked in the family business, becoming president after his father passed, and later developed several residential communities and business rental properties. Bob gave full attention to each of his efforts, none more than to his family and friends. Bob and Nancy thoroughly enjoyed spending time with friends at Virginia Highlands dances, attending Barter Theatre and playing bridge. Together they devoted much interest in their children’s education and extracurricular activities, piano, sports, band and church. In his civic and professional life, Bob was honored as Young-Man-of-the-Year (1962) by the Abingdon Junior Chamber of Commerce, served on the board of directors and as chairman of the tourist committee of the Virginia State Chamber of Commerce; president of the Washington County Chamber of Commerce; the board of directors of the Virginia Highlands Society; at the Abingdon United Methodist Church as chairman of the board of stewards, finance committee, and music committee; as district chairman of the National Federation of Independent Businessmen; on the board of directors for the Washington County National Bank; as a member of the Kiwanis Club; and elected as Abingdon Town Councilman. Bob’s other interests included a lifelong passion for classic and sports cars, playing golf and enjoying 1940’s big band and jazz music. Upon Bob’s retirement, he and Nancy traveled in US/Europe, frequently visited their children and enjoyed time in Charleston, SC, and Venice, FL. Bob and Nancy moved to Maryville, TN, in 2008, and then returned home to Abingdon in 2015. Bob is fondly remembered as a great story teller and driving enthusiast.

In addition to his parents, Bob was preceded in death by his brother Bert Johnson, sister Dorothy Johnson Blom and special uncle Howard Phillips. Bob is survived by his five children: Carol Johnson (Bill Ackerman), Gail Grau (Jim), Jane VanderWerf (John), Marilyn Davis (Kent), and Alan Johnson who reside in CA, VA and TN. Bob and Nancy have eight grandchildren: Laura Ackerman, Bryan (Rachel) and Alex Grau, Kelly VanderWerf, Hallie and Sydney Davis, and Baily and Taylor Jane Johnson, and several nieces and a nephew.

The Johnson family would like to extend appreciation to the staff of English Meadows Assisted Living and Caris Healthcare for their caring support of our father.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Bob and Nancy, who passed in December, on Saturday, April 14, 1:00 p.m., followed by receiving of friends at the Abingdon United Methodist Church.

In lieu of flowers memorial donations for Bob may be made to the American Heart Association (https://donatenow.heart.org/) or to Hampden-Sydney College (http://www.hsc.edu/support-h-sc/give); for Nancy memorial donations may be made to the Arthritis Foundation (http://www.arthritis.org/) or Allegheny College (https://sites.allegheny.edu/annualgiving/ways-to-give/)

___________________________________________________________________________________________

Nancy Graeser Luse Johnson, age 88, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on December 24, 2017, after holiday celebrations with family members.

Born July 25, 1929, the daughter of the late Edwin F. and Nona G. Luse of Charleroi, PA, and the oldest of four siblings.

Nancy was an accomplished pianist and seamstress and enjoyed playing golf, tennis and ping pong. She graduated from Charleroi High School in 1947 where her father was a local school principal and then Allegheny College (1951) as a biology major (Phi Beta Phi) and member of Alpha Xi Delta sorority (1948). One of her favorite summer jobs was working as a counselor at Jumonville Christian camp in PA. Upon college graduation she moved to Baltimore, MD, where she worked as a lab technician at ECBC. While there Nancy met her future husband Robert (Bob) E. Johnson during his service in the US Navy. They became engaged and were married on March 14, 1953, in Charleroi, PA. After his term of duty was completed they moved to Abingdon, VA, which is Bob’s hometown. Bob and Nancy had five children so their lives were full of school, piano, sports, band and church. During the Abingdon summers Nancy orchestrated many weekends at the family lake cabin with children, friends and relatives sharing in the fun. Nancy's many endearing qualities included her constant positive outlook and inquisitive mind -- such a positive role model for her children. To spend time with friends, Bob and Nancy loved to attend Virginia Highlands dances, Barter Theater and play bridge. Along with raising their five children, Nancy held numerous leadership and community roles as president of school PTAs, the Jr. Women's Club, the United Methodist Women, S.E.E. (a school program which promoted gifted education), the Booklovers Club, and Chairman of the Gifted Committee of Washington County, Virginia. She also served on the Art Committee of VA Highlands Festival and supported the William King Art Center. Upon Bob’s retirement, Bob and Nancy traveled in US/Europe, frequently visited their children and enjoyed time in Charleston, SC, and Venice, FL. They moved to Maryville, Tenn., in 2008, and then returned home to Abingdon in 2015.

In addition to her parents, Nancy was preceded in death by her brothers, Richard E. Luse and George F. Luse, II.

She is survived by her husband Robert of sixty-four years, one sister, Jane L. Deakin of Hilton Head, SC, five children: Carol Johnson (Bill Ackerman), Gail Grau (Jim), Jane Vanderwerf (John), Marilyn Davis (Kent), and Alan Johnson who now live in the San Francisco Bay Area, Abingdon, and Knoxville, Tenn. Bob and Nancy have eight grandchildren: Laura Ackerman, Bryan (Rachel) and Alex Grau, Kelly Vanderwerf, Hallie and Sydney Davis, and Baily and Taylor Jane Johnson, and several nieces and a nephew.

The Johnson family would like to extend appreciation to the staff of English Meadows Assisted Living and Caris Healthcare for their caring support of our mother.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Bob and Nancy, who passed in December, on Saturday, April 14, 1:00 p.m., followed by receiving of friends at the Abingdon United Methodist Church.
