Obituary for Herbert D. Clifton

Herbert D. Clifton, age 79, of Abingdon, Va., went to be with the Lord on Thursday, February 22, 2018, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 4, 1938, in Washington County, Va., to the late Fred Clifton and Edna Lillian Mae Woodward Clifton. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by two brothers, Jackie Lee “Fuzzy” Clifton and Robert Irvin Clifton.

Herbert was a veteran of the U.S. Air Force and a member of the American Legion Post 12 in Abingdon. He was a 50-year member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 and also served as a Shriner. Herbert was a lifelong truck driver and retired after 30 years. He was also a bus driver for the Washington County, Va., School System a job he enjoyed for over 15 years. He was a member of Woodland Baptist Church.

Herbert loved working in his yard and could often be seen spending time on his “John Deere”.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Rose Marie Holley Clifton; one son, Donald Allen Clifton and wife Renee of Abingdon; two grandchildren, Sarah Fleenor and husband Justin of Newport News, Va., and Bradley Clifton of Abingdon; one sister, Neta Brooks of Bristol, Tenn.; one sister-in-law, Roberta Clifton of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews; special cousins, Raymond Woodward and Geraldine Tallman; and his canine companion, Cleo.

The family wishes to express their appreciation to his caregivers, Kristin Orfield, Sherry Jobe, Tammy Jenkins, Misty McCready and Kim Woodby for the love and concern that was shown.

Visitation will be from 10 a.m. to 11:45 a.m. Saturday, February 24, 2018, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel. Masonic funeral rites by Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 will follow the visitation. A funeral service will follow with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers and Rev. Carl Young officiating. The committal service will be in Forest Hills Memory Gardens with military honors conducted by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the U.S. Air Force Honors Team.

Pallbearers will be Justin Woodby, Gabriel Woodby, Chris McCarter, Donovan Ferguson, Eddie Briggs, Tony Briggs and Marvin Holley. Honorary pallbearers will be Wayne Vaught, Wayne Hayter, E.C. Poe, Ronnie Osborne and the members of Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts are suggested to the Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC, 29605-4277 or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St Jude Place, Memphis, Tenn. 38105.The family will be gathering at the residence where friends may visit at any time.
