Sgt. Daniel "Danny" W. Freeman
Sgt. Daniel “Danny” W. Freeman, 58, of Abingdon, Va., passed away on Monday, September 4, 2017.
Danny was born on November 19, 1958, in Bristol, Va., and was a lifelong resident of the area. He was a veteran of the United States Army and retired from the Town of Abingdon Police Dept. in 2011 after 31 years of dedicated service. Danny also served as a part time Deputy for the U.S. Marshall Service for many years. He was a member of the Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48 and was also a Shriner. Danny attended Antioch Baptist Church.
Danny loved to travel and especially enjoyed touring battlefields. He was an avid motorcycle rider and also enjoyed fishing and horseback riding.
He was preceded in death by his mother, Naomi Simerly Freeman; and uncle, Mike Simerly.
Survivors include his wife, Cathie Morrison Freeman; special pet companions, Molly Grace and Jazzie Bear; his father, Bobby Freeman; loving and special aunt, Mildred Sobotka; one sister, Amanda Miller of Abingdon; two brothers, Mark Freeman and wife Millie of Damascus and Kevin Freeman and wife Denise of Bristol, Va.; special family, Kim Sims, Kayla Freeman, Kristen Freeman and many special friends.
The family wishes to express a special thanks to Dr. Seth Karp of Vanderbilt University, Debbie Cecil and Tracy Simcox of MSA Home Health, Dr. Michael Spears and staff, Camille Finney and Misty Simerly for all their support and kindness shown to Danny in his time of need.
Visitation will be from 5 to 7:45 p.m. Thursday September 7, 2017, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel. Masonic Funeral Rites will be conducted at 7:45 p.m. by Abingdon Masonic Lodge No. 48. A funeral service will follow with Pastor Brad Davis officiating and eulogy by Dr. Mike Fleenor. Committal services will be held at 1 p.m. Friday at Mountain Home National Cemetery with full military honors.
Pallbearers will be Jon Holbrook, Greg Caldwell, Mike Jinks, Thad Finney, Jack Blackson and Mike Monk. Honorary pallbearers will be Michael Freeman, Gary Simerly, William Simerly and Dr. Mike Fleenor.
Flowers will be accepted or memorials can be made to the Washington County, Va., Humane Society.
