John Thomas Gibson, age 84, of Bristol, Tenn., went home to be with the Lord on August 23, 2017, after a battle with cancer.

He was born in Nashville, Tenn., to the late Claude and Alice Gibson. John graduated from Vanderbilt University, then UT Medical School, and was a pediatrician for 14 years in Orange, CA, and for 11 years in Bristol, Tenn.

He leaves behind his loving wife, Sue Abel Gibson, and five children, Jenny (Eric) Intemann, Steve (Michelle) Gibson, Diane (Brad) Stout, Susan Garland, David (Jana) Gibson. He is also survived by 16 grandchildren: Katie Intemann, Matthew (Kari) Intemann, John Intemann, Abigail Intemann, Brian Gibson, Emma Gibson, Rebekah Gibson, Jack Gibson, Amanda (Brady) Stout Lane, Aubrey Stout, Aaron (Caity) Stout, Andrew Stout, Julia Garland, Rachel Garland, Sean Gibson, and Haley Gibson, and three great-grandchildren: Corban Stout, India Stout, and Oakland Stout. In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by his oldest brother, Walter Claude Gibson. He leaves behind a sister, Frances Sue Edmondson (Charley), a brother, Robert Gibson, and a sister-in-law, Frances Ella Gibson as well as many nieces and nephews.

John will be remembered for his dry sense of humor, his vast historical knowledge, and most of all, his loving care and devotion to his family. He will be greatly missed.

In keeping with Dr. Gibson’s wishes the service will be held privately.
