Obituary for Stephen Lewis "Steve" Gentry

Stephen Lewis “Steve” Gentry, 63, of Abingdon, Va., passed away Monday, June 5, 2017, at his home surrounded by his family.

He lived all his life in the Abingdon area and graduated from John Battle High School in 1971. He was employed at Kern’s Bakery, VDOT and ran his own automobile paint and body shop for several years. Steve also worked as a DJ at WZAP Radio and produced the “Songs for the Heart” radio program. He was a volunteer for Caris Healthcare for over six years during which he shared his music in various nursing facilities and homes. Because of his dedication, Caris Healthcare awarded him in “2015 Volunteer of the Year” award for the East Region. He was an accomplished gospel songwriter and a very talented musician playing multiple instruments. Steve also used his musical talents over the years as a choir director. Steve shared his faith with others wherever he went, and was a blessing to all who knew him. His kind heart and sense of humor brought joy to his family and friends. Steve was a devoted Christian and was always willing to share what the Lord had done for him through his life and his cancer journey.

Steve is preceded in death by his infant daughter, Barbara Joanne Gentry and his father, Lewis Ray Gentry.

He is survived by his wife, Gloria Pennington Gentry; mother, Lillian Roberts Gentry of Abingdon, Va.; daughters, VickieLynn Gentry of Abingdon, Va. and Alysha Greenwell, husband Josh of Bristol, Va. Two granddaughters, Kayla Moody of Charlotte, NC and Samantha Moody of Abingdon, Va. Steve is also survived by his sister, Sandra Meyer, husband Christopher of Inman, SC and several other close family members and friends.

The family would like to thank Caris Healthcare for their excellent care. To the hospice nurses, aids and administrative staff, we thank you from the bottom of our hearts for the special care and support you provided.

Family will receive friends from 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, June 7, 2017, at Frost Funeral Home. Funeral services will be conducted Thursday, June 8, 2017, at 11 a.m. in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel with Bro. Kenny Justice and Bro. Josh Greenwell officiating. Interment to follow at High Point Cemetery, Bristol, Va. Serving as pallbearers are longtime friends Mike Brooks, John Doss, Glen Harlow, Mark Hutton, Sammy Price and Vilas Sims.

Donations may be made in memory of Steve to Caris Healthcare 1701 Euclid Ave., Suite H, Bristol, Va. for Hospice of Ethiopia or flowers will be accepted.
