Obituary for Donald G. Preston


Donald G. Preston, 86, of Abingdon, Va., and former long-time resident of Greenville, SC, died on May 23, 2017.

Born in Spartanburg, SC, on October 3, 1930, he was the son of the late Hubert Virgil Preston and Sarah Ila Nicholson Preston.

For years Mr. Preston was owner of Don’s Meats on Laurens Road in Greenville, SC. In 1972, he joined Campus Crusade for Christ (CRU) as an associate staff member and in 1993 as full-time staff, working and traveling extensively with executives throughout Asia and in South Carolina sharing the Gospel and helping men and women grow in their faith. He was a member of Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church in Abingdon where he served as elder, Sunday school teacher, and Bible study leader. He was a past member of the Abingdon Kiwanis Club and a life member of the Historical Society of Washington County Virginia.

He is survived by his wife, Jeanne Austin Preston of Abingdon, Va.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Virginia Mountain Preston. Surviving are their three children: Janice (Ron) Terry of Greer, SC, Kriss (Jean) Preston of Huntsville, AL, Wayne (Kathy) Preston of Greer, SC; 12 grandchildren and 25 great grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by his older brother, Virgil Preston and his wife Catherine of Springfield, Va. In addition he is survived by his younger brother, Gene (Valerie) Preston of Roseville, CA; as well as by several cousins, nieces, and nephews.

The funeral and graveside services were held in Greenville, SC, on May 27, 2017.

A memorial service will be held in Abingdon on Sunday, June 11, 2017, at 4 p.m. with reception to follow, at Sinking Spring Presbyterian Church, 136 East Main Street.
