Obituary for Hoil M. Houck

Damascus, Va.
Hoil M. Houck, age 95, of Damascus, Va., passed away on Sunday, May 21, 2017, at Johnston Memorial Hospital.

He was born September 29, 1921, in Washington County, Va., to the late George H. and Maude Moretz Houck. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by his wife, June Houck; and one brother, George Henry Houck.

Hoil was a veteran of the United States Army having been stationed in North Africa and Italy during WWII. He was a former truck driver and heavy construction worker for Grondlin Contractors for 20 years before retiring in 1983.

Hoil was a member of Cedar Bluff Methodist Church.

He was a member of Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge #104, Damascus, Va., where he served as master of the lodge in 1959. He was a 58 year honorary member of Abingdon Lodge #48. He was a 50 plus year member of both the E.H. Gill Royal Arch Chapter # 50, Bristol, Va., and Johnston Commandry #14 Knights Templar, Bristol, Va. He was a 32nd degree Valley of Roanoke mason and a member of Shriner Kazim Temple, Roanoke, Va., for 50 years, and a member of Kazim Legion of Honor, Roanoke, Va., where he served as commander in 2000. He was an honorary member of the Kazim Desert Sands Shrine Club and was an active member of the Kazim Parade Unit. Hoil was also active as a Kazim Road Runner, transporting children to and from five of the Shriners Hospitals including Greenville, SC, Lexington, Ky, Cincinatti, OH, Chicago, IL, and Philadelphia, PA. During this time he made over 325 trips to the five hospitals and served as coordinator for the hospitals and temple. He was an associate member of Jericho Temple, Kingsport, Tenn., a life member of the Jericho Legion of Honor in Kingsport, Tenn., a member of the Odd Fellow McCabe Lodge #56, IOOF, Abingdon, Va., V.F.W. Post #9830, Damascus, Va., and American Legion Post #135, Damascus, Va.

Survivors include one sister-in-law, Eileen Roberts and husband, Ron; five nephews, Edward Houck, Bill Houck, Ronnie Houck, Jeff Houck and Mark Roberts; several cousins; and numerous special friends.

In lieu of flowers memorial gifts are suggested to Shriners Hospital for Children, 950 W. Faris Road, Greenville, SC, 29605-4277, in honor of Hoil M. Houck.

Visitation will be from 1 to 1:45 p.m. Wednesday, May 24, 2017, in the Frost Funeral Home Chapel. Liberty Hall Masonic Lodge #104 will conduct masonic funeral rites at 1:45 p.m. A short prayer led by Dr. Edward Houck will immediately follow. Interment with military honors accorded by the Highlands Veterans Honor Guard and the Virginia National Guard will follow at Sunset Memorial Park, Damascus, Va.
