Obituary for George Vernon Owens

George Vernon Owens, age 80, Meadowview, Va., passed away Sunday, March 13, 2016, peacefully at his home.

He was born March 16, 1935, in Glade Spring, Va., to the late John H. “Jack” Owens and Violet Cardwell Owens. In addition to his parents he was also preceded in death by one sister, Eleanor Davis.

George was a 1954 graduate of Glade Spring High School and a veteran of the U.S. Army. He was retired from Columbus McKinnon, following his retirement George enjoyed working at Enterprise Rent-A-Car. He loved being active and serving roles throughout the community, George was instrumental in the founding of both the Glade Spring Little League and the midget football program at Patrick Henry High School. He also served as a Virginia Football Official for many years. George loved spending time with his family and friends, he was the organizer of the Glade Spring High School reunion and also devoted time as an usher at Barter Theatre.

He was of the Christian faith.

Survivors include his wife of 55 years, Mary Duncan Owens of the home; two sons, Keith Owens of Glade Spring, Va., and Brian Owens and companion, Shelia of Meadowview, Va.; one sister, Eva Lester and husband, Don of Glade Spring, Va.; two brothers, Bill Owens of Abingdon, Va., and John Owens and wife, Anne of Spring Hill, Florida; a brother-in-law, Harold Davis of Glade Spring, Va.; several nieces, nephews, and many friends.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday, March 16, 2016, at the Holston Conference Cemetery in Emory, Va., with Minister Ronnie Musick and Reverend Jim Dawsey officiating. Family and friends are asked to gather at the cemetery by 1:45 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that contributions be made to a charity of choice in his memory.
