Obituary for Dora Mae Eggers

Dora Mae Eggers
Dora Mae Jones Eggers, age 96, went to be with the Lord Monday, November 23, 2015, at her home.

She was born September 27, 1919, in Doyon, North Dakota, a daughter of the late William McKinley Jones and Eva Mae Sheils Jones. She and her family moved to Meadowview, Virginia, in 1929 to care for her elderly Grandfather, a Civil War Confederate Veteran. The family moved to Abingdon in 1935. Through the years she worked at Raylass Department Store in Bristol, Virginia, was secretary for Eggers Insurance Agency, bookkeeper for J. C. Vann Equipment Company, and retired as manager of E & L Salvage Furniture. After retirement she was a volunteer at the reception desk of Johnston Memorial Hospital for 23 years. She was a lifetime member of the Johnston Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was named Volunteer of the Year for 2004. She was the oldest and longest cancer survivor in Washington County, having been a cancer survivor for 59 years. She was a charter member of the Abingdon Bible Church and attended Greendale Chapel for several years. She was a wonderful Mother, Grandmother, Great-Grandmother, and a friend to all. She was an excellent cook and never met a stranger. She was the last surviving member of her immediate family.

In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband of 67 years, Richard L. Eggers; an infant daughter, Peggy Jean Eggers; a granddaughter, Kimberly Anne Lotts Campbell; a son-in-law, Kerry W. (Wick) Lotts; one sister, Myrtle A. Jones; and five brothers, Russell Jones, Charles Jones, James Jones, Calvin Jones, and Paul Jones.

Survivors include one daughter, Phyllis Eggers Lotts of Abingdon; two sons, Richard Larry Eggers and wife Jo of Buchanan, Virginia, and Jerry A. Eggers and wife Dorinda of Abingdon; grandchildren, Laura Beth Greer of Abingdon, and Robbie Schlosser of Roanoke, Virginia; three great-grandchildren, Josh Campbell and wife Brittany of Lexington, Virginia, and Aaron Greer and Sarah Greer, both of Abingdon; several nieces and nephews and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be conducted Wednesday, November 25, 2015, at 8 p.m. at Greendale Chapel with Rev. Jerry A. Eggers, Rev. Paul Ketron, and Rev. Kenneth Widner officiating. The family will receive friends at the Church from 6 p.m. until time of the funeral service. Graveside services will be held Friday, November 27, 2015, (the 79th anniversary of her wedding), at 11 a.m. at Forest Hills Memory Gardens with Rev. Bob McCormick and Rev. Austin Cook officiating.

Pallbearers will be Aaron Greer, Bobby Barr, Lance Jones, Charles F. Whiteaker, Larry Sullins, Eddie McConnell, Roy McNew, Zane Pierce, and Jerry Hartsock. Honorary pallbearers will be Men of Abingdon Bible Church, Men of Greendale Chapel, Employees of Frost Funeral Home, and friends. The family would like to extend their heartfelt thanks to our Church Families, friends, caregivers, and the entire community for their love and support and especially your prayers. God bless you one and all.

Memorial contributions may be made to Abingdon Bible Church, P. O. Box 843, Abingdon, Va., 24212, or Greendale Chapel, P. O. Box 1314, Abingdon, Va., 24212.
