Obituary for Dewey J. 'Jack" Vannoy

Mr. Dewey J. “Jack” Vannoy, 68, passed away on Sunday, August 17, 2014, at the home of his son.

He was born May 13, 1946, in Washington County, VA, to the late Rev. John and Della Heath Vannoy. In addition to his parents, Mr. Vannoy was preceded in death by an infant daughter, Ryburne Page Vannoy; brothers, Billy Vannoy, Frank Vannoy, and George Vannoy; sisters, Louise Thomas and Betty McKaughan. He had lived in the Chilhowie area for many years prior to moving to Bristol 8 years ago.

Jack worked his entire adult life in the Construction/Heavy – Highway Industry. In the 80’s he owned and operated Chilhowie Excavating & Paving. He was an expert Equipment Operator, especially on the Motor-Grader. Jack has worked for, or as a Sub-Contractor for, W-L Construction, Maymead Inc., D & D Construction, R.S. Jones and Associates and many others. If you drive in the S.W Virginia there’s a good chance you are traveling on a road Jack built or helped to maintain. In business and in life he always treated people fairly. Jack never met a stranger. Anyone can tell you his trademark was his humorous jokes and punch lines. His old smile will be missed by all of his friends and family especially his nephews and nieces whom he treated as his own sons and daughters.

Survivors include his son, Jackie Vannoy and wife Pam, grandsons Dalton and Daniel Vannoy and grand dog Alf of Bristol VA; brothers, John Vannoy Jr. of Jonesboro TN, Jim Vannoy of Glade Spring VA; sisters, Eta Haven, Sue Anne Spurgeon, Becky Dunn, Berbie Vannoy all of Abingdon, VA, Mary and husband Harold Dunn of Emory VA, and many nieces and nephews.
The family would like to express a special thanks to Wellmont Bristol Regional Staff and Wellmont Home Hospice Cares nurses and aides.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked any contributions to be made to family to help offset expenses, donations may be made to Jack Vannoy at P.O. Box 16085 Bristol VA, 24209.

Funeral services will be held 7 p.m. Wednesday, August 20, in Frost Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Rick Vannoy and Rev. Jason Dunn officiating. Visitation will be held from 5 p.m. until the time of service. Graveside services will be held 1 p.m. Thursday, August 21, at Mount Olivet Cemetery. Family and friends are asked to assemble at the funeral home by 12:15 p.m. for a procession to the cemetery.
