Obituary for Annie Laura Nelson (Montgomery)

Annie Laura Nelson (Montgomery)
Annie Laura Montgomery Nelson, age 79, a longtime resident of the Denton Valley community, went to be with the Lord Wednesday, January 8, 2014, at Wellmont Hospice House.

She was born June 2, 1934, in Washington County, Virginia, to the late Beverly Kitzmiller and Amanda Cox Montgomery. In addition to her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, Charles Claude “Pete” Nelson; one sister, Sally Campbell; and three brothers, James Montgomery, Charles Montgomery and Dave Montgomery.

She will be remembered as a devoted and loving wife, mother, sister, grandmother and dear friend. Although she never worked away from her home she was an extraordinary financial manager and self-made entrepreneur. When she and her husband began their life together in Maryland she took in boarders and family members cooking for them, cleaning, doing their laundry and building lifelong friendships. She spoiled her family with hot meals every day, a spotless home and was known to be the best cook in the family. She made beautiful quilts and shared these gifts with her family and friends. She was a devoted Christian donating to many Christian charities and this showed through the kind and caring demeanor that radiated through her.

She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star, OES Chapter No. 182, in Abingdon. She attended Trinity United Methodist Church, Bristol, VA.

She is survived by two daughters, Karen Montgomery and fiancé, Kent Pafford, and Kimberly Nelson-Rouse and husband Christopher; one granddaughter, Emily Lauren Montgomery; her best friend and sister, Virgie Eskridge; sister, Dorothy Roark; brother, Grant Montgomery; a dearly beloved nephew, Montie Nelson and his daughter, Jennifer Robinson; special nephew, Charles “Junior” Montgomery and wife, Linda; special cousin at Grace Healthcare, Betty “Cookie” Roe; special friends and neighbors, Ruth Hutton of Belle Meadows and Jimmy and Ann Cuddy; numerous other extended family and friends.

The family wishes to express a sincere thank you to Grace Healthcare, Wellmont Hospice House, Dr. James M. Gardner and his nurse Lisa at Magnolia Family Healthcare, Dr. Matthew W. Wood, Jr. and his nurse Heather at Highlands Neurology, Dr. Laura Hutchinson at Wellmont Hospice and Paula Reynolds R.N., Dr. Fincher and Trina at Bristol Cancer Center, all for their devoted care and kindness.

Visitation will be held from 6 to 7:30 P.M. Saturday, January 11, at Frost Funeral Home. Abingdon OES Chapter No. 182 will conduct Eastern Star services at 7:30 P.M. with funeral services to follow with Pastor Lee Roy Henry and Pastor Jeff Taylor officiating. Committal graveside services will be held at 2 P.M. Sunday, in Montgomery Cemetery with Pastor Jerry Fritz officiating.

Active pallbearers will be James Eskridge, Wayne Eskridge, Kent Pafford, Billy Blevins, Timothy Montgomery, Donnie Fritz, Chris Rouse, Josh Boone, and Nelson Elliott. Honorary pallbearers are Montie Nelson, Charles “Junior” Montgomery, Gene Montgomery, Larkin Nelson, Frank “Nip” Nelson, Raymond Vannoy, Dr. Robert Thornton, and Cayden Spencer Colvin.

In appreciation of the care shown to their loved one the family requests that memorial contributions be made to the Wellmont Hospice House, 280 Steeles Road, Bristol, TN, 37620. The family also asks that Wellmont Hospice House give special acknowledgment to each Doctor, Nurse, Social Worker, and Aide who took loving care of Annie in the home and during her stays at the Hospice House.
